Day three in Zermatt. The snow is perfect, the views of the Matterhorn are unreal… but your knee starts complaining on the last descent.
You are wondering if you might need Physiotherapy in Zermatt?
I'm Alessandra Malfa, physiotherapist and ski instructor and today I'll explain you what to do when you have knee pain during your ski holiday week.
Why It Happens Mid-Week?

There are different reasons why your pain comes exactly at the middle of your holiday:
Accumulated quadriceps fatigue: After several days of skiing, your quadriceps muscles become overloaded. Fatigued muscles absorb less shock, which increases stress on the knee joint — especially the patellofemoral joint.
Reduced neuromuscular control: As fatigue builds, coordination decreases. Your nervous system becomes less precise in controlling movement, which increases joint strain and injury risk.
Altitude + dehydration: At altitude in Zermatt (dry alpine climate), fluid loss happens faster than most people realize. Dehydration reduces muscle performance and recovery capacity.
Long descents stress patellofemoral joint: Long downhill runs create repetitive compressive load on the knees and lower back.
Nervous system overload reduces coordination: Cold exposure, intense focus, travel fatigue, après-ski, and reduced sleep all increase nervous system stress. When the nervous system is overloaded, coordination and reaction time drop, pain often follows.
What To Do once you start experiencing symptoms?
I'll give you three quick tips to control your symptoms:
RICE protocol: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, especially in the first 24–48 hours after symptoms appear.
Breathing and meditation (to down-regulate nervous system): Slow nasal breathing (4–6 seconds inhale, 6–8 seconds exhale) helps calm the nervous system and reduce muscular guarding.
Avoid long standing period: After skiing, limit long periods of standing in ski boots or during après-ski. Recovery begins as soon as you finish skiing.
